Introduction
An exciting new destination in a pristine wilderness – Men’s Journal magazine quoted our operation in Las Salinas in its article: “One of 24 trips of a lifetime!”
The Fishing Area
An exciting new destination for Bonefishing has emerged on Cuba's south coast. Las Salinas; ‘The Salt Flats’ is located in the Zapata National park, and has been closed for decades as a Government protected area. The area has just been opened and we have been lucky enough to obtain a contract to bring fishermen to this wonderful environment. The whole area is teeming with wildlife and is completely unspoilt.
The Fishing
What makes Las Salinas different is that each fisherman is accompanied by his/her personal guide, who is experienced in fly fishing, in a flat bottomed skiff. Fishing is a combination of wading on the firm sandy bottom and from the boat. The fishing area is a vast flat divided into many lagoons connected by small channels, making this the ideal habitat for flats species.
The Fish
Bonefish, Permit, Jack Crevalle, Barracuda and a host of other flats fish are in abundance. It is common to catch up to 10 bonefish a day (up to 20 on a good day) with an average weight of 3 – 6 lbs, with the realistic chance of fish in the 10lb class! Because this area was only opened to fishermen three years ago, the bonefish are neither leader-shy nor fussy. Since Las Salinas is within the national park, there is no commercial netting and very low fishing pressure as only 6 anglers are allowed within the area at any one time. As a bonus, the nearby Hatiguanico river offers excellent Tarpon and Snook fishing in season. Both species are prolific with school Tarpon < 30 lbs and Snook < 20lbs, with double figure catches not uncommon. The presence of Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit also make the chance of a Grand Slam a realistic opportunity.
Accommodation
Our lodge is the Bohio Don Pedro with individual wooden bungalows in typical Cuban rustic style with thatched roofs. Each has a large twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom and overhead fan, fridge and T.V. Guests dine in the lodge restaurant which serves excellent Cuban dishes. The open plan bar area offers an ideal place to relax at the end of the day and enjoy a Cuban cigar and a glass of rum and watch the sunset. There are a range of activities for non-fishing guests including visits to the famous Bay of Pigs museum, the scenic 'Cenotes', unique inland saltwater pools full of tropical fish where one can swim, enjoy nature trails and bird watching.
Don Pedro Lodge is simple but comfortable and Cuban Fly Fishers are able to offer some of the most reasonably priced Bonefishing in the Caribbean. The virtually unfished waters and beautiful surroundings make this an ideal destination to pursue the ‘ghosts of the flats’.
